Frankie’s Biography

Frankie Malachi (pronounced mair-ler-kai) is a professional puppeteer based in Singapore, and the founder and creative director of Mascots and Puppets Specialists, a company that produces and choreographs puppets for television, theatre, media, government bodies, and many other institutions.

Frankie is a sought-after international performer, and has performed with puppetry in many nations, including Vietnam, South Africa, Palestine, and Thailand. He was awarded the Silver Award for Best Artist (Group) and the Special Prize for the Preservation of National Art at the First International Marionette Festival 2008 held in Hanoi, Vietnam. His giant puppet creation for the production ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’, Audrey II, was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the Life! Theatre Awards 2006, the first time a puppet was nominated for an acting category.

As creative director and producer, he has directed and produced several projects for performance. ‘The Magic Red Box’, performed in 2006, was Singapore’s first-ever full-scale black light puppetry production. ‘Secrets of Life’ was staged at the Esplanade Theatres at the Bay for the second Out Of The Box Festival of Puppet Theatre in 2007. He also created the puppets for Singapore’s first full-length puppetry musical, ‘The Magic Paintbrush’ in 2001. In 2009, Frankie was specially commissioned to create a series of giant puppets for Singapore’s National Day Parade, the largest parade celebration of its kind in Singapore.

Frankie credits his creative development to puppetry heroes like Jim Henson and Frank Oz, as well as marionette master Phillip Huber of ‘Being John Malkovich’ fame, with whom he has personally studied. Frankie is considered a pioneer in the use of giant puppets, marionette puppetry, and black-light puppetry in Singapore.
